Summer's well underway and the sizzling hot temperatures have gotten you living in your favorite summer go-to's. Summer can bring unseen dangers to our wardrobe because sunscreen, deodorant, and insect repellent can wreck havoc on delicate fibers. Read below for tips to keep your cutest summer items looking great through the season without breaking a sweat!
Tip #1 - Use Vinegar
"One of the best alternatives to commercial laundry detergents is probably in your pantry right now: vinegar." -www.healthline.com
This natural easy to find powerhouse will become a laundry favorite! A cup of vinegar added to your load during the rinse can help your summer wardrobe stay bright by preventing detergent residue and help "set" colors. Pour the vinegar into the detergent compartment of your washing machine or mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with a cup of water and pour into the rinse cycle. Don't worry about the smell, as it will disappear in the wash. An extra bonus: vinegar is a natural clothing softener and disinfectant!
Tip #2 - Pay Attention to your Fabric Type
Summer fabrics are fun, colorful, and light--this is what makes our summer wardrobe so great. But our favorite summer fabrics are also notoriously delicate and must be handled with care. Below is a quick guide on how to handle our favorite summer fabrics!
Linen
Nothing says "summer" more than a pair of crisp light linen pants or your favorite oversized linen shirt. To best care for linen garments, wash them in gentle cycles or better yet hand wash with mild soap. Linen is prone to wrinkles and creases, to enhance the look of your piece, iron on low while damp or bring them into Ace Cleaners for a press!
Vicose/Rayon
Silk
Cotton
Tip #3 - Be Careful with Deodorant
The chemicals in this summer time must can leave a chalky film that transfers on to clothing. Overtime, this can build up and cause stubborn set in stains that are hard to remove. Even more troublesome, the chemicals can weaken the fibers of the fabric.
The best way to combat pesky deodorant and sweat stains is to
Be conservative when applying
Allow the product to completely dry before dressing
Look for aluminum free deodorants.
Wash or dry clean as soon as possible to prevent stubborn stains from setting
Tip #4 -Rinse Bathing Suits ASAP
Cute bathing suits are a summer time staple! There's no better way to cool down on a hot summer day then hanging out by the pool or beach! But pool chemicals, sunblock, natural body oils, and sweat can all wreck havoc on swimsuits! To keep the suit looking fresh all season long be sure to rinse with cool water as soon as possible after wear. Hand washing with a small amount of mild detergent is the best way to preserve the color and elasticity of the piece. Always allow the garment to air dry as heat can damage the material.
Tip #5 - Prevent Fading and Sun Damage
By now we all know that the UV rays damage our skin. While the UV radiation can be helpful in keeping our whites brighter through sun bleaching, these harmful rays also damage leather goods and fade colored fabrics. Always protect those beautiful leather sandals and handbags by wiping them down with a damp cloth to remove dirt and store them in a breathable dust bag or an old pillow case. To help leather shoes retain their shape, be sure to reuse the shoe inserts that they came with.
